Sliding Storage Solutions

Here is that slide out pantry that just about all RVs have in one form or another.  It may be just like this a metal rack that slides out or it could be individual shelves that slide out. Another thing all pantries have in common is they usually are tall, thin cabinets.  The only thing you can do with a tall, thin cabinet is put stuff in it until you can just get the door shut.  The result is the stuff in the front is easy to get to and the stuff in the back, well there is no telling what is in the back of a tall, thin cabinet.  It is this slide out feature of the pantry that has inspired what I call sliding storage solutions.    As you will see I have applied the sliding storage solution to several cabinets in my RV, but first lets look behind the door above this pantry.

Surprise another pantry, not quite as tall as the one below, but a deeper pantry which was specifically made to hold can goods.  The following photos will show how this can goods pantry was made.

Here what I stared with.  A cabinet that was 25 inches tall by 9 inches wide by 26 inches deep and as you can see, no shelves.  This type of cabinet is a storage nightmare just wait to begin as soon as you start filling it up with stuff.

Here is what you need to eliminate this nightmare:

(1) set of Heavy Duty Drawer Slides capable of supporting 100 pounds cost about $20 The slides come in various lengths from 12 to 24 inches.  The depth of you cabinet will determine the slide length.

(1) 2 x 4 foot sheet of 1/2 inch plywood $5 to $15 depending on the grade of plywood

Wood Glue

(1) small box of 1.5 inch braids

Lowes or Home Depot has everything you need

This is the bottom of the cabinet where I mounted the slide rails to a 2 x 24 inch piece of plywood.  Four "L" brakets were attached to the rails and then  screwed into the bottom of the cabinet.

This is the pantry installed on the slides.  It is basically three boxes with 2 inch sides.  The two top boxes can only hold objects 6 inches tall and the bottom box can hold item about 10 inches tall.  Since these slide have ball bearings this pantry slides easier then the one that was factory made by the RV manufacturer.  This pantry also normally has about 50 pound of can goods in it when loaded.

This was not in my list of material but as you can see this keeps the pantry from sliding open when we are on the road.

Here it is in the hole load with groceries.

Hear it is loaded fully extended.

Here is another slide storage solution.  This is my slide out trash can with a little bit of storage in the back.

Last is my slide out under the kitchen sink storage.  This is great because of having these bottle of cleaners and spray bottles just stuck under the sink in dark.  This mkes everything easy to see and you do not have to get down on your hands and knees to find what your looking for under the sink.  The other good thing is all this stuff stays in the box when traveling instead of falling down and rolling around when traveling.
